First Musjids in South Africa

THE HISTORY OF ISLAM in South Africa needs to be learnt and taught to our children. In this glimpse we list the first Musjids in SA:

  • The first was Auwal Musjid in Dorp Street, Cape Town built around 1794;
  • The second was Palm Street Musjid in Cape Town built in 1820;
  • The 3rd was Nurul Islam Musjid in 1844;
  • The 4th was Musjidul Qudamaa in Uithenhage, the first to have a minaret, built in 1845 or 1849.
