Established in 1955, the Jamiatul Ulama (Council of Muslim Theologians) is involved in various activities in the service of Islam and the Muslims in SA, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal. About 300 Ulama are members.
ACTIVITIES:
- Issuance of Fatwa (Decrees on Religious matters);
- Marriage counselling and settlement of marital disputes;
- Arbitration on commercial disputes;
- Supervision of Madressas including a syllabus and training;
- Publication of Islamic literature including Al Jamiat;
- Social welfare and Da’wah activities;
- Relief operations locally and abroad including Bosnia and Sudan
Other spheres include self-help schemes, prison and burial services, bursary fund for Islamic and secular studies and an independent media monitoring service. A wealth of info can be obtained from their website as well: www.jamiat.org.za.
