GIBRALTAR near Spain is named after the 1st Muslim general to lead an army into Spain, Tariq bin Ziyad. He landed at the spot which was named Jabal Tariq in Arabic meaning Mount Tariq. The Arabic was changed to Gibraltar.
This is but one of the many influences of Muslims on Spain, Portugal, Italy and France in particular and from there on Europe in general. Is it a coincidence that Portuguese and Spanish explorers became famous when Christians reconquered Spain after 700-years of Muslim rule?
From then, the advanced Muslim culture crept into other parts of Europe and took them from the dark ages into light.
