Our Parents

There was a person named Uways Qarni who hadn’t seen the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam. The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said that one should ask him to seek forgiveness. Uways came to Umar t after the demise of the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam and Umar t requested him to ask forgiveness for him. One of the qualities that Uways had that was mentioned by the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, was that he treated his mother kindly.

The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam commanded a Sahaabi, ‘Go back, and the same way you made them (your parents) cry, make them laugh.’ Ibn Umar t said, ‘Making one’s parents cry is among the major sins!’

Please your parents for the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said, ‘The Pleasure of Allah is from the pleasure of the parents, and the anger of Allah is from the anger of the parents.’

Haywah bin Shurayh t a scholar of Islam, used to give classes in front of his home. During the class, his mother would call him to feed the chickens. He would stand up, and go feed the chickens.

The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam advised a Sahaabi who wanted to go in Jihad that he should stay near his mother: ‘For at her feet is Jannah!’

...then do not say to them uff (a word of disrespect), nor shout at them, rather address them in terms of honour… (Qur'an 17:23-24). The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said, ‘If Allah knew any smaller than uff to be disrespectful to parents, He would have decreed it Haraam!’

Sins forgiven: Allah commands us to be dutiful and kind to our parents and in the next verse tells us: They are those from whom We shall accept the best of their deeds and overlook their evil deeds, (they shall be) amongst the dwellers of Paradise. [Qur'an 46:15-16]

Paradise: The Hadith says that may the person perish whose parents attain old age in his life, one or both of them, and he does not enter Paradise (because of his goodness towards them).
